IRON MOUNTAIN -- The VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Michigan has been named a top performer in the nation by The Joint Commission for the second year in a row.
A report released on September 14 shows that the Iron Mountain VA is in the top 18 percent of Joint Commission-accredited hospitals. The hospital is one of only 244 that have received the recognition for the second year in a row.
"We are extremely honored to, once again, be named on the list of The Joint Commission's Top Performers," said Jim Rice, Director of the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center.
The VA Medical Center has the largest geographic patient service area east of the Mississippi River, with approximately 53,000 veterans. The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center oversees community-based outpatient clinics that serve 15 Michigan and 10 Wisconsin counties.
"These hospitals are leading the way in quality improvement, as American hospitals as a whole continue to make strides," said Mark R. Chassin, M.D., President of The Joint Commission.
Top performing hospitals meet two 95 percent performance thresholds. To be recognized as a top performer, hospitals need to hit the 95 percent or above score for accountability measures for which data is reported to The Joint Commission.
The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center has met the threshold goals for Pneumonia.
"This honor proves that the VA's dedication to evidence-based care and performance measurement accountability are placing the veterans' health care among the top tiers of the country," Rice added.
As a top performer, the VA Medical Center will be recognized in "Improving America's Hospitals" annual report.
