Ross Olsen wishes MSHS would have had a moment of silence on 9/11

MARQUETTE -- When Ross Olsen walked into Marquette Senior High School this past Tuesday on September 11, he was expecting to have a moment of silence to remember those who had died.

But classes went on as usual.

"I was kind of devastated on Tuesday the 11th of September, as my school did not recognize the tragedy that happened on 9/11," said Ross.

Marquette Senior High School did fly their flag at half mast but did not have a moment of silence. And Ross, who has had friends and family in the military, didn't think that was enough.

Even though Ross was just five years old when 9/11 happened, he remembers sitting in a classroom at Sawyer Elementary School. He says the looks on his teachers faces once they learned that the Twin Towers had been destroyed is a memory that he'll have forever.

"Being a patriot to me is all about commemorating this country for what it's worth, what it was, what it is used to be, and what it's going to be. And I hope that one day, everyone will recognize 9/11, and I hope that we will all start to remember the country a little bit," Ross said.

MSHS Principal Bob Anthony says they didn't mean to offend anyone by not having a moment of silence.

"There was no intent on the school's part to not commemorate 9/11 on a school-wide basis at one moment in time. It's pretty hard not to be impacted, even 11 years later, on what happened on that tragic day," said Anthony.

As for Ross, he's still hoping for a more patriotic future.

"I hope that every classroom in the future has a flag in it, that every classroom says the Pledge of Allegiance in the morning. That's how it used to be, and I love doing that kind of stuff. I love my country," Ross added.
