HOUGHTON -- Monday's early morning thunderstorms didn't keep participants away from the 9th Annual Portage Bridge Walk.

The five-mile walk is based off the Mackinac Bridge crossing.  Walkers start on at the Houghton Beach, make their way over the Portage Lift Bridge, then through Hancock, and eventually end up back at the beach.

The event was not a race; walkers could move as fast or as slow as they wanted to.

"People just take it at their own pace.  They just come out with their family and have a good time, just to kick off the Labor Day Week.  And they can do it as long as they want.  They can walk one mile or five miles. We hope that everyone completes it, but if not, that's fine, too," said event organizer, Emily Kunnen.

Kunnen added that at least 100 people registered for the Bridge Walk.
