HOUGHTON -- It was a messy scene Wednesday as a semi truck filled with scrap metal overturned in Houghton.

No other vehicles were involved and the 51-year-old truck driver from Norway was able to remove himself from the vehicle.

The accident happened at around 8:40 Wednesday morning while the truck was heading southbound just past the Portage Lake Lift Bridge on US-41.

Traffic was diverted as a tow truck and two construction vehicles pulled the truck upright.

It took two hours to remove all of the left over scrap metal.

The Houghton Police Department says the accident is still under investigation and the driver was taken to Portage Health.

No information was given on his current condition.

The Houghton Police and Fire were assisted at the scene by Michigan Tech Public Safety, Hancock Police Department, Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, and the Hurontown Fire and Rescue.
