ESCANABA -- He's a World War II Iwo Jima survivor who has spent his life serving others in the community, and on Thursday Richard Morrison of Escanaba was honored as the Upper Peninsula Veteran of the Year.

Morrison received special recognition from politicians, most notably Governor Rick Snyder. During his military service he received decorations like the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and the Presidential Citation Ribbon. Morrison's continuing duties include the Marine Corps League's Toys for Tots program.

"Well, it's almost time to start with our Toys for Tots program," said Morrison. "So we'll be working on that. Starting Labor Day weekend we'll be selling candy bars to raise a few extra funds for Toys for Tots."

Morrison celebrated the day with his family and many well-wishers who attended the ceremony.
