HOUGHTON -- A local soldier is recovering after being wounded in Afghanistan. Twenty-six-year-old Steven Nelson attended Calumet High School. He's one of four Army National Guard soldiers wounded in the incident.
TV6 spoke with Nelson's mother who says her son is doing very well after being seriously injured when an IED detonated while he was on foot patrol in Afghanistan last Wednesday.
Nelson is recovering at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.
His mother, Rhonda Nelson, says her son has no head or brain trauma, and he is interacting with hospital staff.
“The medical issues at this point, he has lost his left eye. That is gone. His right eye, there are a few abrasions on his cornea, but they are confident that that is going to heal. He said he can see out of it just fine. He has some vascular damage done to the upper left arm,” said Rhonda Nelson.
Nelson's mother also says he has shrapnel wounds on his face and arms, and he'll need a lot of physical therapy.
On Tuesday, Steven Nelson will be sent to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center located in Bethesda, Maryland.
