MARQUETTE -- An exhibit at the Beaumier Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University is getting a little help from a fiddler.

Trae McMaken is a Lower Michigan musician. He uses the sounds of his fiddle to tell the history of the Great Lakes regions. This Wednesday Trae is performing stories from Beaver Island, an archeological site used in the exhibit. The island, just south of Mackinac County, is known for its Irish history and rustic image.

"Beaver Island is still very much a mystery for a lot of people, even from Michigan, and so the exhibit really does take the veil from Beaver Island, which is kind of this mysterious island in the middle of the lake, and music was a big part of the social life on the island with dancing and fiddling," said Beaumier Heritage Center Director, Daniel Truckey.

The performance takes place Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Beaumier Heritage Center. The event is free, but there is a suggested donation of five dollars for adults and one dollar for students and children.
