MARQUETTE -- Healthy schools are the focus of a conference this week in Marquette.
Representatives from nine central and eastern Upper Peninsula school districts met on Thursday morning. They learned about programs to increase physical activity opportunities and healthy food choices for students.
The two day conference began with a keynote address by Dr. Pat Cooper, a superintendent who has transformed some socio-economically disadvantaged schools in the southern United States.
"I hope they take away that they can do it," said Sault Tribe Project Coordinator Donna Norkoli. "I know it's tough times in schools now with budget cuts, but he has done things on shoestring budgets, so I hope they get that attitude that anything's possible."
The districts attending all receive money from a Sault Tribe Community Transformation grant.
