NEGAUNEE -- Negaunee Public Schools hired 11 new teachers at Monday's school board meeting. The added teachers are meant to accommodate the all day kindergarten program beginning this fall.
More than 100 teachers applied for the positions. Board members feel this gave them a chance to select new talent for the jobs.
"Very good applicants across the board, so making the decision, we feel that we got the best of the best as they came out of college or were looking for new jobs. We feel really good about the people that we're hiring," said Jim Derocher, the Superintendent for Negaunee Public Schools.
A number of the teachers are from the area including Negaunee High School and Michigan Tech graduates. Following the meeting, the new teachers visited Lakeview Elementary where many of them will be working in the fall.
