REPUBLIC -- Anglers are getting their rods and reels ready for the 22nd annual Fishing Derby in Republic.

The event is an all weekend derby on the Michigamme River, July 21 and 22, starting promptly this Saturday at 6 a.m.

There are eight fishing categories being offered, the biggest of which being walleye.  The first place winner of the derby will take home $1,000. Awards are given out to the person with the longest fish in each category.

Along with the derby there will be a parade, fireworks, and food.

"We've got camping. Anytime there's an empty spot there are tents, campers, you name it," said Sportsman Club Secretary Aileen Todd. "We have food, we have all sorts of things going. It's a good time for everybody. There's music both Saturday and Sunday."

If you want to participate in the derby, the entry fee is $15 for adults and $5 for teens. Registration can be done at the Beauty Nook in Republic.
