An increasing number of Americans are turning to one of oldest healing practices
NIAGARA, WI -- Millions of people say acupuncture is just what the doctor ordered as an excellent alternative to ease aches and pains. But, how does it work?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing practices in the world. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, we have an energy called Qi that circulates our body.
“When there’s imbalance in the body...when there’s pain, asthma, allergies, hormonal imbalances, it disrupts the flow of Qi,” says Naturopathic physician and Acupuncturist, Dr. Kerry Niebryzdowski.
Acupuncture aims to restore that imbalance by stimulating points in the body. But can it cure what ails you? Experts like Dr. Niebryzdowski say yes.
“It can treat asthma, allergies, menopausal complaints, thyroid complaints, immune diseases, neurological disorders. Its applications are vast and very effective,” Dr. Niebryzdowski says.
According to a 2007 National Health Interview survey, between 2002 and 2007, acupuncture use among adults increased by approximately one million people. Dr. Niebryzdowski says she sees a growing number of patients coming to her Radiant Natural Health Clinic for acupuncture and actively treats about 50 weekly.
Colleen Carey came in to Dr. Niebryzdowski for severe back pain caused by surgery nearly two years ago and since then, she was hooked.
“You can’t feel anything. There’s almost no pain. It’s almost like the needles remove the pain; there’s this little sensation and then all the pain goes out of the needle,” says Colleen.
