Community members held a benefit concert for Makayla Whitehead

MUNISING -- Music was blaring in Munising's Bayshore Park Thursday as community members held a benefit concert for Makayla Whitehead, an eight-year old girl who was mauled by a pit bull last month.

It's all headed by Makayla's godmother, Cori Cearley, who has helped raise almost $2,000 to assist in medical bills.

The main event was a performance by The Gator and The River Boys, whose star drummer is Scott Kusmirek from the Gin Blossoms. The concert was just six dollars and included dinner from Johnny Dogs and Cooking Carberrys.

"I was called by Cori to come down and help out and donate, and I just thought it was a community thing. It's something for everyone to get behind, support local music. It's kind of a tragedy what happened to Makayla, and just everybody is kind of getting together, celebrate, and have fun with music," said entertainment coordinator, Scott Kusmirek.

One of the biggest hits at the concert was a two dollar bracelet that says "Miracles for Makayla."
