ISHPEMING -- Police have now released the names of a victim and the suspect in Friday's apparent homicide in Ishpeming.

The victim has been identified as David Scott Meyer, Jr., age 29. Jacques (Jack) Earl Carpenter, 52, of Ishpeming, was taken into custody at the scene without incident. Police have not released a mugshot.

A witness that reported the incident around 1 p.m. Friday says he was also held hostage inside the home, police said. He eventually left and contacted police. His name is not being released at this time.

Carpenter is being held at the Marquette County Jail without bond on several charges: one count of homicide-open murder, which is a life felony, unlawful imprisonment, assault with a dangerous weapon, and weapons felony firearm. The unlawful imprisonment and assault with a weapon charges stem from Carpenter allegedly preventing the eye witness from leaving after the shooting and also from allegedly threatening the witness with the firearm if he went to police.

Meyer had recently been staying at the residence at 409 N. Second St. and was renting a room, police said. It's believed that Carpenter and Meyer had an argument before the shooting. No information is released on the details of the argument at this time.

The Ishpeming Police were assisted in the investigation by the Marquette County Sheriff's Department, Michigan State Police, Michigan State Police Crime Lab, Ishpeming Township Police and the Negaunee Police Department. The incident is still under investigation.
