MARQUETTE -- Women who are looking to learn more about roller derby have their chance this weekend in Marquette.  The "Dead River Derby" group is having an informational meeting from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Lakeview Arena.

They'll do a demonstration and have gear on hand so people can get a feel for how the fast paced, full-contact game is played.  The sport, first popular in the 1930s, has been making a comeback in the last decade, and organizers think it will catch on in Marquette.

"To get women involved and to give women an opportunity to do something completely different that society doesn't always approve of," explained derby participant Jess Laxo.

"It's fun, it's something new in this area, so I think it will bring a lot of enjoyment to everybody who gets involved," added fellow skater, Amy Lakanen.

Women of all ages, skill levels, and body types are encouraged to attend on Sunday.  The group is also looking for officials and other volunteers.
