MARQUETTE -- Nearly 100 Bothwell Middle School students chose bikes as their mode of transportation on Wednesday morning.

The kids, along with 10 teachers, met at the YMCA and south beach and rode in groups to school. The initiative is part of the Safe Routes to School grant, and it gets students to consider walking or biking instead of driving.

"Well it's important to get the kids active, particularly in this day and age, and really to promote awareness because Marquette is a bicycling community," said Bothwell Teacher Travis Smith. "And the more people we can have walking and biking continues to promote awareness of people on the road."

When the bikers finally made it to the school, they were greeted with bottled water and high fives.
