ISHPEMING -- Bell Hospital recognized students in grades six through eight from Ishpeming, Negaunee, and Aspen Ridge for participating in the "Strength from Within" program.  Students were asked to track their eating and exercise habits in a journal. They also did community service by volunteering.  At the end of the program, participants submitted essays about their experience.

Judges reviewed the essays and awarded a one year scholarship to Northern Michigan University to Hanna Wisuri.  Organizers say they believe the program is beneficial because it allows participants to establish lifelong healthy habits.

"This is actually an age where changes can happen in a lifestyle that they will take for the rest of their lives," said Emilie Stack of Bell Hospital.

This was the second year for the Strength from Within campaign. The plan is to continue the program next year, and officials hope to increase the number of participants.
