MARQUETTE -- Marquette residents can expect to pay higher water and sewer rates starting July 1.  As part of the new budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, the rates for water, sewage and storm water use will all be going up.

Water bills will see a five percent increase while sewage gets a nine percent increase.  One of the major reasons for the price hike is conservation.

"We're seeing decreased water usage that we can bill out, and a lot of that is due to people conserving water, which is what you want to see, but at the same time, we have to keep our revenue base going so we have to increase rates," said Marquette's Chief Financial Officer Gary Simpson.

The increase will mean an additional $3.59 per month for sewer and $1.35 per month for water.
