ESCANABA -- The race is on in Escanaba.  The Upper Peninsula International Raceway is holding eight races this year, and drivers recently attended the first practice of the season.  Most of the drivers are from Delta county.

They practiced at the newly-renovated race track on the U.P. State Fairgrounds and made sure they had the right gear ratios for their car.

The first race of the season is on May 19, and around 80 race cars are expected to race.  All of the drivers will race for the track development fund and to share the love of the sport.  The drivers don't actually race for pay.

"Racing in the past few years is a family event.  It makes it more enjoyable for the whole family.  People come here and they have their wife and kids in the pits, you know," said Race Director, Tom Dubord.

Practices will be held every weekend leading up to the May 19 race.
