MARQUETTE -- It's a day worth celebrating for more than 1,000 students and their families.

It is graduation day for Northern Michigan University. Commencement took place at the Superior Dome. Faculty and graduates paraded to their seats while Pomp and Circumstance played. The event was broadcast on WNMU Television. The national anthem and Alma Mater were performed by Soloist Kelli Polkinghorne. Several inspiring speeches were given by students, the Board of Trustees, and President Wong.

Graduate Jessie Laurie hopes to become a high school English or Spanish teacher in the area.

"I am feeling nervous, I'm feeling excited, I'm feeling like all of my hard work has finally paid off," said graduate Jessie Laurie.

Of the 1,035 graduates, 835 decided to participate in commencement.
