HOUGHTON -- For the first time ever, Michigan Tech University students will graduate in green.

The cap and gowns students will be wearing are made of 100 percent recycled material.  With the change to recycled gowns, students will see a slight decrease in price as well.

Tech expects 1,000 students to receive their diplomas and says since 27 water bottles equal one commencement gown, that means 27,000 water bottles will be kept out of a landfill.

"Michigan Tech is all about sustainability, so it was really important to find a company that we could work with for our recycled caps and gowns," said MTU Office Assistance Becki Belanger.

MTU has already received over 400 orders and says as long as the company offers the recycled graduation gear, they will permanently sell it.  In Michigan Tech's sustainability efforts, after graduation, students will have the option to donate their gowns which can be reused by future graduates.
