MARQUETTE -- There were more than 55,000 vehicle-deer collisions in Michigan in 2010. According to the Michigan Deer Coalition as many as half of all vehicle-deer collisions aren't even reported.  

Department of Natural Resource biologists say this year's unusual weather makes it more likely you'll face an unwanted encounter with wildlife.

"I think we're seeing a lot more deer on the roadside right now because we had that real early snowmelt, things aren't greening up as soon as they typically would. Along with salt residue from all the winter's salting actions, all those things can attract deer," said DNR Biologist Brian Roell.

If a collision happens, Michigan State Police say you should pull over, carefully exit your vehicle and assess the damage, then dial 911 so law enforcement can create an accident report.

The incident will show up on your driving record, but you won't receive a citation related to the accident.

If the damage to the vehicle exceeds $1,000, you'll need that report for insurance purposes.

"One thousand dollars in damage on a vehicle is not much anymore, most people want a police report if they want to get their car fixed," said Sgt. Kevin Dowling of the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post.

Facebook fan Justin Meilstrup suggests if you hit a deer to: "Call home, tell them to light up the grill because dinner will be home soon."

But, if you're hoping to turn a unfortunate road incident into a meal, there are some things you've got to do before loading up.

A highway kill permit is required to legally take home a deer or bear carcass. It's free, and there are no limits on the amount you can have. Without one, you could be in trouble with the law.

"It's likely a misdemeanor, it carries a penalty of possible jail time and a fine," said Dowling.

The DNR uses highway kill permit information to track the  wildlife populations, make sure people aren't in possession of an illegal animals.
