MARQUETTE -- It's an issue more prevalent than ever and this month, it's marked with purple and teal ribbons. The Women's Center of Marquette is highlighting Sexual Assault Awareness Month with their annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event.

We spoke to one survivor of domestic abuse.

"He raped me numerous times and it was very hard when I first came here to say it was rape because it was my marriage, and people don't look at it as rape," said a survivor.

And she's not alone. In fact one in every four women by the age of 18 falls prey to sexual and domestic abuse. Our victim wanted to stay anonymous but said her story needs to be told. Last year, she walked away from an abusive marriage and walked in to the Women's Center in Marquette.

"We feel like we have a place in the community," she said.

This month, the center is wrapped in purple and teal in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and their message is clear.

"You're not alone, and you don't have to do it alone," Sexual Assault Advocate Kelly Laakso said.

It's a battle that law enforcement says is fought all year round, and most of it remains untold.

"It's a shame because often times the perpetrator in those acts doesn't get caught until maybe several other victims down the road," Det. Lt. Michael Wasie said.

Officials at the center say it's never too late to stop the violence. Often times even early signs can be alarming.

"Somebody who is very controlling and has the dominance in the relationship is usually a red flag to watch for," Laakso said.

"Women blame themselves," the survivor said.

"They feel shame, they feel guilt, they feel like it's their fault and it's not."

Now a year later, this woman has turned her life around.

"I've given my daughters a chance at a healthy future, and I've given them someone to be proud of," she said.
