HOUGHTON -- Bicycles come in all shapes and sizes, and the beginning price of a bike usually starts at around $300 and can go as high as $15,000.

In 2007, more than 18.5 million bicycles were sold, but when it comes to making that purchase, experts say it all depends on what the customer is looking for.

“We’re going to ask them some questions about the type of riding they’re doing, where they’re riding, who they’re riding with, and what their purpose of the bike is. That gives us a good starting point for what they need and then we can evaluate what bikes will be the best for them,” said Bike Shop owner Steve Vizanko.
 ,
Road bikes have very thin tires and are designed for riding on pavement, while mountain bikes have fatter tires which are much more common in this area.

If you are new to the bike riding world, experts will usually recommend a basic mountain bike because it offers the best type of riding range, especially if you are unsure of what type of riding you are going to do.

“You want to buy a bike that matches your style of riding and something that’s in your price budget and in your price range,” Vizanko said.

If you are looking to save a few bucks, experts recommend purchasing a used bike or one that is on sale.

“Well, I’ve been riding bikes for quite a while. I enjoy mountain biking in particular. The area has great trails, and I look for something fun to peddle around, not too heavy and can handle the sort of riding I’m looking for,” said shopper Andy Kienitz.

If you still cannot decided on what type of bike you are looking for, try continuing your search online or renting to ensure you are getting the most out of your purchase.
