MARQUETTE -- A new bike event will be replacing the traditional Lake Superior Bike Festival in downtown Marquette this summer.

The bike fest was called off last summer due to low registration numbers.  The Marquette Downtown Development Authority, local businesses and bike enthusiasts have been working together ever since to keep a cycling festival downtown.

This summer they're introducing the Marquette Bike Jam.  It's a three-day event scheduled for June 29 through July 1. Organizers say the format will be similar, and many events will be returning, but it will also be more affordable and friendly for locals to participate.

"An event that focuses on top athletes and racers is only going to draw a certain crowd, a certain percentage of that crowd," said Event Director Jon Becker.  "Our hope is that we can create an event that will appeal to families, youth, people of all skill levels."

River Valley Bank has signed on as the title sponsor.  Organizers say they still need $30,000 to $40,000 in sponsorships to host the event, and they expect about 500 people to participate.

Registration opens March 1 online.  If you are interested in the event, check out this article on Downtown Marquette's website.
