NEGAUNEE -- Dozens of middle school students from Negaunee traded books for snowshoes Wednesday morning as a reward for their excellent behavior.
About 30 sixth and seventh graders from Negaunee Middle School donned snowshoes and braved the snowy terrain for three-and-a-half miles from Negaunee to Ishpeming.
Their trek began on Baldwin Avenue which had them cross Teal Lake before ending at Birchview Elementary School in Ishpeming.
The adventure was rewarded to those students who displayed good citizenship in the classroom.
"But hopefully this is a lifelong sport and it will teach them, hey, it doesn't matter how old you are or how young you are, you can still enjoy the outdoors," said middle school teacher Mark Churchill.
"We just get to go snowshoeing and have fun, hang out with friends and eat lunch at Al Quaal," added middle school student Colton Yesney.
Citizenship awards are regularly given at the end of each quarter.
Previous trips included ice skating, sledding and cross country skiing.
