MENOMINEE CO. -- Menominee County residents no longer have to wait for special drug collection events in order to get rid of expired or unused pharmaceutical drugs.

The Menominee County Sheriff's Department has a new drug drop box in the lobby of their jail. Residents can anonymously drop off medications 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. According to Sheriff Marks, teen prescription drug abuse is on the rise. These prescription pills can be as addictive as using street narcotics.

The program also helps keep the environment clean.

"What we don't want people to do is just flush them down the toilet or throw them in the garbage where it either contaminates our environment or potentially can be found by other persons," said Sheriff Kenny Marks.

There's also a high number of breaking and entering, police said. They hope the drug drop-offs will lower the number of people who go into homes in search of prescription drugs.
