HANCOCK -- It's a brand new year, and with it comes a large amount of snow. High winds and low visibility have made it difficult to get around in the Keweenaw. In some places, nearly a half foot of snow had fallen with the wind drifting in a lot of areas and around cars.

With these winter weather conditions, officials want drivers to pay attention and drive carefully.

"When it gets really bad, and this is probably our first real bad one for the year, the main thing is to slow down," said Hancock City Police Chief, Michael Beaudoin. "I mean, obviously, you cannot drive like you do on bare pavement."

With the large snowfall, accidents can happen.

Monday morning, a woman driving on US-41 toward Calumet said she tried to avoid something in the road, lost control of her vehicle, and spun out and ended up in the ditch. The driver was not injured during the incident. A tow truck was able to pull the vehicle out.
