NEGAUNEE -- Before hitting the snowmobile trails this season, young riders had to hit the classroom Wednesday morning. It's all part of a snowmobile safety course put on by the Department of Natural Resources and the Marquette County Sheriff's Department.
At Negaunee High School, students spent half the time inside learning about rules and regulations, proper outdoor gear, and survival tips in case of an emergency. They also got hands-on experience outside of snowmobile maintenance.
The safety course is required for all riders under the age of 18.
"We're out here to teach them the basic things that they need to keep their snowmobiles in top operating conditions," said Marquette County Sheriff's Department Corporal Errol Lukkarinen. "These are the future generation snowmobilers, and we want to make sure that they're safe and they're responsible."
The next safety course will be held in January.
