HANCOCK -- When it comes to art, there is definitely no age limit, and for those interested in perusing art, starting small is key.
Practice makes perfect, and starting off with a pencil and paper is recommended.
"Beginning with pencils, graphites, and colored pencils is really a lot simpler for someone to get into. There's less setup time and probably less expense all the way around, and it's something you can do anywhere," said Keweenaw Archive owner Kevin Hodur.
The Keweenaw Archive is located in the Jutila Center, and they offer various art supplies for beginner and intermediate artists.
This is a sketch book, and artists say it's a good starting place. Adding pictures can be used as a reference tool to create and inspire different ideas. Sometimes just paying attention to people or certain places is also a good form of inspiration.
Kevin says he opened the store because there wasn't a huge art supply store in town, and he felt it was a niche that needed to be filled. He also says that for those interested creating art, the hardest thing to get past is the idea of being an artist.
"I don't call myself an artist. Maybe what I make is art, but I tell that to other people as well. It's about having fun, being creative, and finding something that you enjoy doing that relaxes you," Hodur said.
Some other tips for the beginner artist is take least 15 minutes everyday to dedicate to drawing or painting, take classes or shadow a more advanced artist to enhance your skills, and, finally, don't be afraid of rejection.
Art can be a great escape, and there are no rules when the creation process begins.
The more art an artist produces, the better they will become.
