HOUGHTON -- With a recent shooting on the campus of Virginia Tech, many want to know how prepared Michigan universities are if an event like this were to occur.

Michigan Tech's Public Safety officials say they have a Safety First alert system which will notify the campus community via text message, email and phone messaging.

"In the event that an emergency does occur on campus, anybody receiving any one of these types of messages should follow the instruction in the message as to how to respond to the emergency," said Dan Bennet, Director and Chief of MTU Public Safety.

Michigan Tech campus officials also say their thoughts and prayers go out to the families, coworkers, and friends of the police officer and civilian who were shot and killed.
