ST. IGNACE (AP) -- Update:  search and rescue crews are returning to base this afternoon after the wreckage of a single-engine plane was found on shore with both men aboard deceased. One of the men is Amazon.com executive Tom Phillips.

A Commanding Officer of USCG Air Station Traverse City confirmed that aircrews from Air Station Traverse City located the wreckage of the plane at around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. It was found about three miles north of St. Ignace on land.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The U.S. Coast Guard says searchers are looking for a single-engine plane that disappeared in the Straits of Mackinac with two men aboard.

The Coast Guard's Cleveland office says the plane left St. Ignace in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on Saturday night, bound for Mackinac Island. The planned flight is about 4.5 miles and six minutes. In a statement Sunday, the Coast Guard said the plane failed to arrive as expected about 8 p.m.

On board were Tom Phillips and Joe Pann. Phillips is in his late 50s, and an executive for Amazon.com. Pann is in his late 20s. Both are from northern Michigan. The Coast Guard says its crews and other federal, state and local agencies are involved in the search of northern Lake Huron.

It says the plane is a Piper Saratoga.
