MARQUETTE -- More than 10 percent of adults have diabetes, and 40 percent are at high risk for the disease, and that's why on Monday, World Diabetes Day, the Upper Peninsula Diabetes Outreach Network wants to spread awareness.

The organization says type-2 diabetes is linked to our lifestyle, the foods we eat and amount of exercise we get.  On World Diabetes Day, UPDON wants U.P. residents to be healthy and be active, eat fruits and vegetables and get up and move.

"Take one action today to include more fruits and vegetables or more whole grains or decrease your portion sizes, and also think about looking at your activity level right now; what's one little thing you can do to get more active?" said UPDON Director Ann Constance.

UPDON encourages all U.P. residents to know their risk factors including their family history, blood pressure and cholesterol.
