A powerful low-pressure system is moving its way into into the Great Lakes today, already bringing heavy snow to some parts of Upper Michigan.

The highest amounts are expected to fall in the highlands around Marquette, Baraga, and Dickinson counties. Places here, especially away from Lake Superior, could see as much as 10" of snow by tomorrow morning with some spots getting even more. Generally, through the interior Central and Western U.P., expect anywhere from 4-8 inches.

As you move towards the far western U.P. or in the east-central counties, those amounts will dwindle. The far western U.P. simply won't see the heavier snows, but the eastern U.P. will be limited for a different reason-- the snow will change to rain as you start to get into eastern Alger and Delta counties. Areas towards Newberry may not see more than an inch.

But this round of snow from the storm itself is just part of the story-- lake effect snows will kick up later tonight and strong, cold northwesterly winds blow across Lake Superior. Another couple inches can be expected through tomorrow in the northwest-wind snow belts.

Winds this afternoon could gust over 40 mph along the Lake Superior shoreline. The winds, and snow showers, will gradually diminish on Thursday.
