MARQUETTE -- Northern students and Marquette residents heard some of the possible pitfalls of the current campaign finance system in the United States.
Jocelyn Benson, a law professor and author from Wayne State University, presented "Behind Closed Doors: Secret Money and Secret Influence" in the Reynolds Recital Hall Thursday afternoon.
Benson spoke on how large corporations donate money to political campaigns to influence decisions in their favor. This, she says, shifts the focus of politicians away from the people they were elected to represent.
"Unfortunately the current state of the law make it sort of difficult to ensure that people are still at the forefront of the mind of our elected officials, as much as they should be," said Benson.
Benson is also the author of "State Secretaries of State: Guardians of the Democratic Process" and is a frequent media commentator on election law.
