MARQUETTE -- There are currently 84 homeless veterans in the Upper Peninsula, but the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain says that shouldn't be the case.

Every person who serviced our country should have a place to live.  That's why on Thursday, they hosted a homeless summit at Lakeview Arena.  The purpose was to inform community organizations about VA services and to develop partnerships that will work together towards ending veteran homelessness in the U.P.

"Homelessness is a national issue," said Nicole Foster-Holdwick of the VA Medical Center.  "It's a veterans issue and it's also a community issue, and in the community is where we're going to fix the problem."

The Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness, Room at the Inn, Great Lakes Recovery Center, and Veterans Service Officers were all in attendance at Thursday's forum.

It's just one step to a five-year federal plan to end homelessness for veterans.
