NEGAUNEE -- Kindergarteners from Lakeview Elementary School got to see firsthand how firefighters battle fires.  The students visited the Negaunee Fire Hall and had firefighters show them their equipment and how they use it to fight fires.

It's part of the fire department's annual fire prevention program, which helps educate kids and parents on how to prevent fires and about the importance of smoke detectors and making an escape plan.

While most of the children watched in wide-eyed amazement, firefighters say their goal is to make sure the kids aren't afraid of them.

"We do get some that get scared," said Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Gardyko, "especially when it comes time to wear our PPE and our air packs, and we try to teach kids firefighters are there to help them; they're not there to scare them."

The department will also hold fundraisers to purchase smoke detectors to hand out to the classes.
