The title refers to a 1920s concept that allowed consumers to try out an appliance for a month, on approval

HANCOCK -- The idea is unimaginable in this day and age.  But the cast of “On Approval” is putting it to the test.

The title of this light-hearted British comedy refers to a custom in the 1920s that allowed consumers to use an appliance at home for a one-month trial.

"You could take it home and try it out for one month, and if you liked it, you’d keep it, and if you didn't like it, you could return it," said Director Melvin Kangas.

An appliance...or marriage, in this case.  A not-so-ordinary concept with a not-so-ordinary cast.  Director Melvin Kangas himself steps into the role of a female, Maria Wislak, a bitter widow, cynical about love.

"Her girlfriend Helen says, ‘Well would you ever marry again?’ And she says, ‘Well I would, but I would take him away alone for one month, on approval,’" Kangas said.

He says it’s different from any other play he's directed, but his character is something he says he is all too familiar with.

"She is very domineering, and she believes everything she does is right,” Kangas said.

Filled with humor and wit, On Approval brings the not-so-subtle message of finding out people's true colors before it's too late.

"It's the funniest play I’ve done, and obviously working next to Melvin Kangas, it has been an honor," said cast member Kendra Benson.

The play starts Thursday night at 7:30 and runs through Sunday at the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock.

Tickets can be purchased at the door:  $10 per person, $5 for children under 12 years.  Finlandia students attend free with a valid university ID.
