SAWYER -- After only a year of operation, Cliffs Natural Resources' renewable energy production plant could be facing a shutdown.

So far, there has been no definite decision to close the facility, which manufactures biomass fuel cubes, but representatives say all options are on the table.  The plant has been struggling to get to the production level and capacity level they had originally anticipated, and representatives say it's time to evaluate.

"At this point, the Board of Directors for Cliffs Natural Resources will be evaluating RenewaFUEL, and they'll make a decision at some point in the future as to the direction of the company," said Dale Hemmila of Cliffs Natural Resources.

Cliffs says RenewaFUEL's problems involve its production and operation, not the workforce.
