IRON MOUNTAIN -- Seeing 325 motorcycles roll into one location is a pretty impressive sight...especially when they are veterans.

Tuesday, veterans from across the U.P. welcomed the American Legion Legacy Riders to Iron Mountain including National Commander Jimmie Foster.

"It's a great honor for us, that’s for sure,” said Iron Mountain American Legion Post 50 Commander Jerry Hicks.  “Usually the national commander travels all over the United States and actually all over the world, and to have him stop here is quite an honor."

Riders from across the country are on their way to Minneapolis for the American Legion National Convention beginning Friday.

Along the way, the riders are making stops to raise money to help send the children of fallen soldiers to college.

So far the group is impressed with how they've been received in the U.P.

"People were with children waving American flags and American Legion flags, actually welcoming them and actually appreciating what they're doing for this country," said National Vice Commander John Nella.

But locally, putting this event together was no easy task.  Local legion members needed to find a location that was both appropriate and big enough to feed more than 300 riders, and the Veterans’ Memorial on top of Pine Mountain came to mind quickly.

"It's a reward for all the hard work of the many people that have been involved with this Veterans’ Memorial and park,” said Pine Mountain Veterans Memorial Co-Chairman Dennis Larson.  “To be chosen for a stop says a lot, and to have the honor of the national delegation coming here is a testimony to our veterans."

The riders will make their way to Minocqua, Wisconsin Tuesday night before completing their trip to Minneapolis Thursday.
