MARQUETTE -- Saturday, Northern's LPN students made history as the last class to graduate from the program.

Friday night was the pinning ceremony for students in the Licensed Practical Nursing program.  The program was recently the victim of budget cuts and has been suspended indefinitely.

Faculty members say they had to consider the welfare of other programs in the nursing department and suspended the LPN program based on the availability of other programs in the region.

Though faculty are proud of the graduating class, they say the celebration is bittersweet.

"We are very, very proud of the heritage of our LPN program, and that all of us feel a sense of loss about that program, but I think tonight is a celebration of how wonderful that program was," said Accociate Dean of Nursing, Kerri Schuiling.

NMU graduation was held Saturday at the Superior Dome.
