ISHPEMING -- Update 5:46 p.m. EST

The victim of the fatal assault has been identified as Carl Wayne Mercer, 43, of Negaunee. 

The man who allegedly assaulted Mercer is identified as Thomas Arthur Hyttinen, 37, of Ishpeming.  He was arraigned Monday evening on charges of homicide, second degree.

Authorities say the incident was considered a beating death, with signs of excessive force.

Hyttinen is being held in Marquette County Jail on $1 million bond.

Update 4:30 p.m. EST

The suspect being held for this assault is set to be arraigned in court on Monday evening.

One man is dead after an altercation that happened early Monday morning on North Fourth Street in Ishpeming.

The Ishpeming police received a call from two neighbors around 4 a.m. that an assault was taking place in the building.

It appears that a 43-year old Negaunee man died of injuries sustained in the assault.

He was transported to Bell Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A 37-year-old Ishpeming man is now in custody for assault.

The Ishpeming and Negaunee Police Departments along with the Michigan State Police are investigating the incident.

The Michigan State Police crime lab is searching the scene for any and all evidence.

Names from the incident are being withheld.
