MARQUETTE -- It was a symbolic ceremony for anyone who is currently preparing to become a part of the Catholic Church.

Sunday at Saint Peters Cathedral, the Rite of Election and call to continuing conversion were held at the Diocese of Marquette.  People from across the Upper Peninsula professed their commitment to becoming members of the Catholic Church.

The first ceremony, the Rite of Election, people either from different faiths or a non-faith tradition begin the final preparation period in the rite of initiation.

The second ceremony, the call to continuing conversion, those who were baptized Catholic, declared their commitment to complete the initiation.

"Easter is the time when we receive new people into the church who have been interested in becoming followers of Jesus Christ, and we receive them into the church at Easter and basically the Easter vigil service, which is the night before Easter Sunday; however, Lent is when it becomes more serious, a time of preparation for their entry," said Father Ronald Brown, Moderator of the Curia.

Sunday's ceremonies were also a chance for parishes from all over the U.P. to come together.
