ROCKLAND -- The Upper Peninsula Power Company has begun to lower the water levels at the Victoria Reservoir. It's located in Ontonagon County, near Rockland, on the Ontonagon River.
UPPCO will drop the levels at the dam an additional 14 feet below the usual spring drawdown. This is to conduct inspections on the dam while it is frozen.
The company will make gradual reductions, about a half a foot every day, until they reach the targeted elevation of 880 feet, which should be around mid-March.
After the inspection of the dam, UPPCO will refill the reservoir, which they anticipate will be done by the end of April, depending on the snow melt.
During the drawdown of the Victoria Reservoir, people using the ice recreationally should use extra caution. Conditions could become unstable in the area of the reservoir and in the river.
