MARQUETTE -- A Kingsford dentist has been sentenced in federal court on charges of illegal distribution of narcotics outside the normal course of professional practice.

Fifty-year-old Robert D'Amour was sentenced to 14 months in prison and fined $10,000.

D'Amour pled guilty to charges of writing a prescription for a patient, paying for the prescription, then arranging to have the drugs returned to him for his own use.

D'Amour was previously investigated for similar charges 15 years ago.  D'Amour's attorney says the sentence is fair.

"I think the sentence was fair, but obviously disappointing, that Dr. D'Amour will not be continuing his practice and will have to serve some incarceration, but it is good to know he'll be back and likely practicing dentistry in the near future," said D'Amour's attorney, Trent Stupak.

D'Amour was originally charged with 50 counts, however, all but one were dropped with the plea agreement.
