People showing a sense of "ownership"

ESCANABA -- Although the official numbers are still being tallied, fair coordinators say last week's U.P. State Fair looks to exceed expectations.

It was a record breaking day just on Saturday for both attendance and revenue.  Also, sales on the midway look to be up 14 percent compared to previous years.

This was the first year the fair was put on by the fair authority and not the state.  The authority is made up of representatives from all of the U.P. counties and the Hannahville Indian Cmmunity.

"We're very pleased with the results, but I think what we're most happy about was the sense of ownership that we heard as we walked through the grounds and talked to the people associated with the fair.  There was a tremendous sense of ownership because they kept talking about it being 'their' fair," said Delta Area Chamber Executive Director, Vickie Micheau.

Micheau expects to get a final figure on fair attendance by mid-week.
