FORSYTH TWP. -- Some people are calling it an 'asphalt paving scam,' but Saturday TV6 spoke to the owner of the business involved.
According to a Marquette County woman's attorney, a group of men showed up at her home Thursday, offering to pave her driveway with leftover asphalt from a nearby project. The woman's attorney says the asphalt company demanded the woman pay cash and didn't offer her an invoice.
Owner Zane Lovell of Citizen's Asphalt spoke to TV6 over the phone Saturday afternoon, and says he is just trying to earn a living.
Lovell said, "We don't do bad work. I'm not going to risk my crew and job to lay a free driveway. She didn't say anything until the end. Everybody that works on the crew has families to feed. I'm not the guy they say I am."
Lovell says that he and the Marquette County woman had a straight deal, and that she agreed to pay him upfront. Lovell also claims he never demanded that the woman pay cash because that wouldn't be 'business-like.' He says he told her that a check was just as good, and that he could also provide her with an invoice.
Lovell says he's not hiding anything, and he wants to get his side of the story out.
According to Lovell, his attorneys will continue trying to resolve the matter on Monday.
