NEGAUNEE -- Five-time Olympic medal winner Janet Evans was in the U.P. Saturday morning for the seventh annual Teal Lake Swim.
She was on hand to pass out awards, sign autographs, and offer words of wisdom.
Swimmers jumped in early Saturday morning in Negaunee and made the 2.2 mile trek to Ishpeming.
This year's winner was, once again, Brad Cowan, who crossed in 48 minutes, 54 seconds.
All of the proceeds from the race go towards the Upper Peninsula Diabetes Outreach Network.
"I have my oldest brother who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was 25 years old," says Evans. "He's now 43 and he lives with it, and I've learned a lot about diabetes. I've learned how serious it can be, I've learned it's a condition where many people think 'oh you can control it, so it's not that big of a deal,' but it is a very serious condition, and we need to raise money to send kids to camp with diabetes, but also for research as well."
This year's swim had a record attendance with 117 people participating.
