BIG BAY -- The Powell Township school bus garage is also an outdoor art studio; at least the Liberty Children's Art Project has been using it as one. The art camp, which began in 1995, is designed to bring art enrichment to rural children in the Big Bay area.
"Their opportunities aren't as abundant as they are in a community that has a larger population," said director, Carol Phillips. "You can expect to do a lot of different things in a lot of different media (at the camp). We'll be working in drawing, painting, printing, and clay."
The best part about the camp is its price tag! Thanks to local donors, kids can exercise their creativity for three dollars a day. The camp is free for Powell Township residents.
"It's unbelievable," Phillips said. "I have to just say thanks to the Marquette County Community Foundation for supporting this art camp this summer."
That low cost draws large crowds. Phillips says about 25 children, grades K through high school, participate each day.
While the program is geared towards rural kids in Big Bay, campers come from all over, like nine-year-old Garrett Haun who vacations in the U.P. with his family.
The camp has two sessions--the first ends this Friday and the second runs August 9-13.
If you're interested in joining, Phillips says all you need to do is show up!
