Keweenaw treasure chosen as U.P.'s favorite natural wonder

HOUGHTON -- It's big, it's beautiful, and it's the U.P.’s favorite natural wonder.
Brockway Mountain features the highest scenic roadway in the Midwest and has some of the best views in Upper Michigan, surrounded by miles of water, trees and sky.
It's worth the drive to Copper Harbor, and at more than 700 feet above Lake Superior, it's an ideal location to watch for raptors or take pictures.
"On a clear day you can see Isle Royale or watch for freighters on Lake Superior," says Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dallas Bond. "It’s one of those things that even people who are new to the area ask how to get to."
Tourists and locals have fallen in love with Brockway for its year-round beauty. The mountain becomes a popular snowmobile trail every winter, it's a favorite lookout for color-spotters in the fall, and it's a summertime haven for hikers, bikers, really any outdoor enthusiasts.
"The roads are wonderful for motorcycles and the lake is pristine," says visitor Mike Grage. "It’s just beautiful."
"I’ve been coming here for about 55 years," says Hancock native Jim Brusorio. "Whenever relatives come in from out of town, it's one of the places we take them to show the local beauty."
The twists and turns of Brockway Mountain Drive have been taking visitors to this Keweenaw treasure since the early 1930s.
"It was built during the depression era when work was scarce, and it gave people an opportunity to have jobs and help the economic vitality," Bond says. "In recent years, it's become a civic vitality."
But to truly appreciate Brockway’s beauty, you have to see it for yourself. If you've never been there, now is the time to visit with the trees green and the flowers in bloom, and the weather has never been better.
