HOUGHTON -- While some are building snow statues, others are enjoying the chilly games that are part of Michigan Tech's Winter Carnival.

Saturday morning, students faced off in skating races in the Dee Stadium.  Winners of the heats earned points towards the overall Winter Carnival competition.

And unlike other events, like human ice bowling, the skating event is extremely competitive.

Charlie Ciarkowski of Sigma Phi Epsilon said, "This is my 17th season playing hockey, so I'm a seasoned skater.  So, yeah it helps.  We did actually win, so it's a good start to Carnival."

Other Winter Carnival events include ice fishing, the Yooper Sprint, and cross-country skiing.

The all-night statue building takes place next Wednesday night.
